So well written. I love saying yes more and the guidance that follows. When I was raising my children, back in the 70-80’s, life was full of getting the kids to school on time and then getting to work and never seeming to see or understand what there true needs were. We all do our best, many times falling short. Your children are very fortunate to have you as mom.
Yes, we all do our best! There is research that shows that our children don’t need us parents to be perfect. Rather, they just need us to be good enough. 🙌❤️
Thank you for always sharing your heart and wisdom! Congrats on making it through the first year of middle school!! So proud of M! What a gift it is to be a witness, even from afar, of his journey; and to experience his heart, soul, light, and talent! ❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing. I am very happy that M is doing so well at middle school. Middle School is a transitional period for our children, as they have to leave the protective environment offered by elementary school and enter an environment where important changes will begin in every way academically and emotionally. They stop being kids to start being more independent pre-teens.
Awh, thank you Lola. And thank you for sharing your wisdom on this transition. It’s such a joy having your perspective as I follow behind you. How was A’s year in college?
Thank you for this piece. Feeling grateful, again, for the lessons learned at CCS and how they have translated to teenhood. And I love who these kids are. I’m so glad M. had such a strong year and I hope he (and you) have a wonderful and restorative summer!
As always, you have intuited your way to the core of what is most important when parenting. Meeting your children where they are. It's not always easy to see the changes, but they are constant and if we aren't course correcting alongside them, we lose them. It was something I tried to be so conscious of with R. Sometimes I was busy with work and I missed an opportunity, because apparently I'm human 🥴, and other times we would sit in his room talking until 3 am so he felt heard and seen.
There is no roadmap, but truly knowing and seeing your child will give you most of the information you need. M & B are very lucky to have you as their mama. ❤️
Wow. Mic drop! Sage wisdom Ruthie. Thank you. You have such a beauty and grace with children. I see it in every interaction you have with mine. Thank you! 🫶🏼❤️
Congrats on making it through this first year. I too am so grateful for the foundation they had, and especially the ease of life in those K-6 years. We are SO happy to be halfway done with middle school! I agree that the greatest lesson I learned as a parent this year is that maintaining the connection is everything. Listening, learning, not needing to fix. Enjoy your summer!
I get such a smile on my face when I run into you here, Sarah! Congratulations on one year down! “We” did it. lol. It was Neil who told me a few months back the wisdom of needing to move from “no” to “yes” now. While obviously I am not saying yes to everything it’s been a great shift in how I think in meeting M where he’s at. And yes…it’s all about our connection with these great “not so little anymore” humans. Sending love to you all!
So appreciate you sharing your journey, wisdom, resources and truths with the community. Middle school has been top of conversation in many of my circles lately so this post feels very timely and the support I needed to navigate the transition with my son next year. Thank you as always for the time you take to write each week! Lots of love. ❤️
Thank you Reese for being here. I remember like it was yesterday…middle school on the horizon and wondering how was it going to go for my son. I’m so glad today’s essay reminded you that we are all in this together. Next week I’ll be announcing a little something that will be even more supportive of us as a community here to support one another. Have a great week ahead!
I don’t have children but I have seen you with your children. You are an amazing mother. They know you are there for them in a non-judgmental way. I think that is so important. you support and encourage them. They are both fearless. clearly M is showcasing that on stage. He crushed it!

Thank you Yousra for your steadfast support of my children! And thank you for the beautiful role model you are for us all!

I’m so grateful to be sharing this journey with you Kelly and that M and M have each other! As my Great Aunt would say, “God is smiling on us.”
